Music Boxes

Interactive archive digital grave dancer

Overview:

A memorial wall was being created for Sam Zell, a prominent benefactor for the Bucktown Wicker Park Chabad Jewish Center who commissioned Grant McCune (of Star Wars original trilogy fame https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grant_McCune) over the years to craft specialty music boxes with a new theme and design every year. After 2015, they went with more traditional static sculptures with the same uniqueness and quality.

Our client was tasked with developing an interactive archive to view these models as well as other art commissioned by the Zell family.

Client: Bucktown Pictures (Agency, Art Gallery)

The Problem

The task was translating 33 photogrammetry scans into GLTF (.GLB) format meshes for use in a real-time web viewer (Three.JS) created by their internal developer.

There are strict composition requirements to be compatible with Web Platforms, be under 50mb, only 1-2 material slots in total, and perform at above 60hz with no stuttering or artifacting.

Budget only allowed 3-hours per model for quality control and a tight deadline of 2 weeks.

A previous contractor did not work out and they sought out our expertise to bring these scans to life.

Our Solution

Jeff and Connor collaborated on modeling via Blender, remeshing with Zbrush and painting in Substance Painter to meet the technical requirements and time limit

Generated 33 new meshes, textured to client's request (diffuse, normal and ORM) and 11 transparent icons of the traditional sculptures for preview icons in the

application

The Results

  • 33 unique GLTF models:

    • Under 50mb

    • No more than 2 material slots

    • Diffuse, Normal and Ambient Occlusion/Metallic/Roughness (ORM) textures at 4k resolution

    • Performant 60hz on client's display engine with no stuttering or interruption

  • 11 Transparent PNG Icons:

    • Of the traditional sculptures that were not music boxes

    • 2048x2048 with alpha channel

    • Poses were chosen by client
