VR Robotics Training

During the height of COVID, the need to continue education in the classroom became more pressing for the trades as they could not convene all students for classes.
We were approached to develop a POC that would help the teacher improve training, adhere to COVID guidelines (stay at home order) and offer students an environment to experiment in without harming equipment.
They chose VR as their platform in order to immerse the students in a learning environment and give them controls that would match their real world counter parts, no matter the size of their home, be it an apartment or a house.
The Problem
Students were not allowed to enter the physical training lab except for 5 at a time including the teacher. In classes of 20+ students, this was a bottleneck.
The teacher had issues with students reading the very dense books on the basics of robotics, which caused students to ask many more questions/repeat lessons, slowing training and diminishing returns on retention.
Our Solution
Using Unreal Engine and the Meta Quest 2, we created a lab environment that would roughly match a typical robotics lab and have the same tools they would use to program sequences in the robot.
Working closely with the teacher, we transcribed lesson plans from his notes, implemented chapter quizzes/recaps, and guided sequences for the students to follow along with in an interactive manner.
The Results
The trial testing had positive results with students having a better grasp on the lessons and scored higher than their traditionally trained peers. It alleviated the teacher by having to repeat less content for students to catch up and most polled students noted positive feedback from learning in an virtual environment.

We designed, developed, tested and deployed the entire application from concept to deployment of the POC on client headsets. Using Unreal 4, Blender and the Meta Quest 2 headset.
